Vampire Knight #03 — Ein Luftballon

CHOMP
Huh. Luftballon only has one ‘o’. Learn something new every day.
Impressions:
I really despised the way they handled the ‘big’ reveal about Zero being a vampire. It’s been pretty obvious since episode 1 and was made even more obvious with everything else leading up to it. We didn’t need Kaname doing bad exposition in the middle of Zero going all bloodlusty on us. Either toss it before or after, not in the middle of a dramatic scene. You should never ever ever EVER EVER cut away from the action to explain it, especially when all you’re doing is just filling in a few missing pieces to the little puzzle. There was also some occasional terrible art this episode. That shot of Yuuki is going to give me nightmares. Seriously… is that even the same person as this?
ALL THAT SAID, it was a pretty quality episode. For all his hatred of vampires, Zero finally got around to actually killing one, though Yuuki remains in her little naive little "vampires and humans can be friends" bubble. I don’t imagine that Zero chomping on her is going to change that all too much. Aidou’s fascination with garbage was also pretty surprising and funny. I actually like his character a lot. I find him a lot more sinister than I do any of the other vampires just for the capricious way that he toys with everything… and now we know that he loves broken things. He’s like the anti-Suigin Tou.
Headmaster Cross tries to win over his family via cream stew. Yuuki and Zero are less than amused. Me neither.
The vampires have a meeting in the morning. They’re all a little cranky from being up late. Early? Whatever. There are going to be dorm inspections, and they’re subject to them as well. Of course, there’s nothing any of them have to fear. Well…. except for the ones that have a love of collecting strange broken things… not that we’re looking at Aidou or anything. Kaname punishes Aidou as is becoming usual.
A strangely eyeless Yuuki collects all the crap that the day classes have collected about the Night class. Photos and whatnot. Even the guy with the crush on the girl vampire has his stuff confiscated. This naturally makes Yuuki unpopular with the others. As she gets ready to throw them all away, she sees Zero outside napping.
He pants a bit and looks at a pillcase, but quickly hides it when Yuuki runs up. He brushes her off and says that they’re finished here. The next stop is the Night Class dorm. A strange old man greets them as they go in.
Kaname supervises the other vampires in looting all of Aidou’s ‘illicit treasures.’
On the steps, Yuuki gives Zero a brief dressing down, but trips on the stairs. Way to make a stand for women everywhere, Yuuki. Zero catches her, sending both on a slow motion tumble to the ground. Yuuki somehow manages to come up with Zero’s pillcase, and wonders what it is. He angrily snatches it away.
Kaname watches the antics, and chases off Aidou with a glare when he wanders over.
Zero storms away from the Night Class dorms. Yuuki wonders what to do and then decides to chase after him. She heads into town to try to find him, but becomes distressed. She starts running aimlessly and bumps into a girl with bloodred eyes, but doesn’t notice.
She eventually finds a bench and sits down to rest. She realizes the feeling… it’s the same as when she was attacked by a vampire all those years ago. She hugs her chest and a red flash drifts past her eyes… it was just a balloon held by a child.
The kid lets go of it and it catches in a tree. Yuuki leaps up to get it, but the kid runs off.
Zero is having noodles. It’s a special service! OH BOY!
Yuuki and her luftballoon try to find the kid. She runs through alleys looking for him and eventually finds him alone at a dried up waterfountain. She doesn’t notice the bloodred eyed woman now behind her.
She walks up to give the kid his balloon. The child reaches out for it, but grabs her sleeve instead. Yuuki finally sees his face as he roars and tries to bite at her.
Zero senses something and runs out on the bill.
Yuuki somehow escaped, but the other vampire is hunting her now too. Yuuki dodges it’s attack and keeps running. She wonders what these campires are as she clutches her wrist. She eventually finds a clocktower to hide in. She can’t believe that these are also vampires though, especially after seeing all the beautiful night class photos. She thinks of Kaname especially.
Finally, she reaches for her electrostaff and readies it. The female feral vampire lurks right outside her window.
Zero finds her blood on the ground as the feral female one attacks him. He manages to kick it away at the lsat second. He draws his pistol as it rushes him, but sees an image of it when it was just a human and holds up.
It stops at the last second as well and calls him companion repeatedly. This pisses Zero off and he shoots it down in anger. The boy vampire is standing right behind it.
Zero’s remembers the attack on his family briefly and recognizes the boy vampire. It laughs and then jumps upward into the clocktower. Yuuki screams from within.
It perches on her staff, clawing at her face. She throws it off, but it lands on the gears and the bell starts ringing. The deafening noise forces Yuuki to cover her ears, and it starts to attack again.
It suddenly stops… there’s someone else here… Kaname. Kaname walks over to Yuuki and covers her eyes. The power flows out from him and the boy vampire screams. He uncovers her eyes and the boy is completely gone.
Yuuki asks what that was, and he tells her it was a Level E… so not really a vampire. Kaname says that’s wrong, it was, but cuts her off to look at her wounds. He asks why she was out here, "looking for Zero" blah blah. Just below them, Zero pants on the steps and leaves.
Yuuki excuses herself from her friend’s room, saying that the wounds on her hands are nothing and runs off.
Headmaster Cross meets with Kaname and a couple other night class members to discuss the feral vampire. Kaname thanks them, but Kaname demands to know how much longer he’s going to allow the situation with Zero to continue.
Yuuki tries to collect Zero to make their rounds, but his room is completely empty.
Headmaster Cross reminds Kaname that Zero’s family was slaughtered… but Kaname says Zero will become the same.
Zero struggles with himself. Visions of Yuuki flash through his mind.
Yuuki walks through the halls of the school. Suddenly, she feels the same thing as when she was attacked and shudders in fear. She runs off… and comes upon Zero.
Kaname reminds Cross that Zero’s family were hunters. Blah blah.
Yuuki tells Zero how scared she was, but that wasn’t a vampire. That was some kind of a monster.
Kaname says that what will happen is immutable destiny.
Zero yells at Yuuki to stay back. She demands that he tell her what’s happening. They’re the same, etc. Zero tells her that she’s wrong. She apologizes. She thought that she was getting close and he was opening up, but maybe not. She apologizes and tries to run.
Zero grabs her arm, but the bandage on her hand comes loose and the smell of her blood overpowers him. He grabs her and licks the nape of her neck. He bites. Yuuki looks down at the bloodpills on the ground. Yuuki shakes him off and looks into Zero’s glowing red eyes wondering what this means.
Kaname continues the tale of Zero eventually becoming a vampire. Blah blah pureblood attacked blah blah.
Yuuki tries to understand what’s going on. Zero snaps out of it and his eyes revert. He apologizes. Yuuki finally FINALLY realizes that Zero’s a vampire.
