Vampire Knight #04 — Suicide is Painless

April 28th, 2008

Actually, I think clawing open your own throat is one of the more painful ways to go.

Impressions:

Man, I’m tired of Kaname and Zero. We get it. They’re stereotypical Lestat vampires that could have been ripped straight from Ann Rice. They’re very very pretty and lead such tragic lonely lives saved by the love of others. Let’s move on. Or let’s just have more of Idol Aidou. He’s great. In a world of pretty boys all making veiled threats and menacing, he’s a thug. Give him five minutes alone with Yuuki and I’m sure she’d be on his side as well. At least, assuming that those five minutes aren’t spent showing her his collection of broken lightbulbs.

Unfortunately, very very little actually happened this episode so there’s not too much to say. The question of what’s going to happen to Zero still remains, more questions about Kaname and Yuuki without actually giving any decent hints (though I for one already know where that’s leading eventually), and in the last 30 seconds or so, Yuuki hugs Zero, which is a step down from getting a taste of her precious precious bodily liquids. Although, the sexual tension when Zero was straddling Yuuki and telling her to ‘shoot’ into him… hoo boy… I think I need a cold shower.

Zero’s… A VAMPIRE! SHOCK! LOUD NOISES!

Kaname smells blood and runs off.

Zero tries to approach Yuuki. She doesn’t back away. Kaname comes up between them and accuses Zero of being a mindless monster. Yuuki thinks that Kaname’s going to kill Zero and puts herself between them, but passes out in Zero’s arms from bloodloss. Kaname picks her up and asks Zero if it was worth it? Was Yuuki’s blood really that delicious?

Kaname walks past the Headmaster with Yuuki and leaves Zero to him.

At the clinic, Kaname has cleaned up Yuuki’s wound. He asks her if it hurts, but tears are still pouring down her face.

He asks if she’s scared of vampires now, but she shakes her head. The headmaster knocks on the doorframe and tells Kaname that the night class will need his attention now.

Yuuki’s father takes over bandaging her up. He apologizes, saying that he had hoped things never came to this. She asks him how long Zero’s been a vampire, and he basically says that Zero wasn’t a human before she met him. Four years ago, when Zero’s family was killed, that’s when he was irrevocably altered. Blah blah blah, more exposition. It was a pureblood that attacked Zero’s family. He reassures her that she won’t become a vampire from being bitten by him though.

Yuuki thinks of the times she found the blood pills on Zero’s stuff. Good job, Nancy Drew.

Aidou spills some of the blood wine on the table where it immediately crystalizes. He thinks that this is all planned. He keeps pouring the wine, freezing it in the glass and then licks it. Now Yuuki’s part of it too.

Yuuki thinks to herself that she didn’t know anything. For the last four years, Zero’s been struggling, and she didn’t know anything. Yuuki’s mind flashes through her various vampire attacks.

As she walks around, she hears Kaname’s voice. She eavesdrops on him discussing what to do with Zero with the headmaster.

Zero should be transferred from the day to the night class for obvious reasons. Yuuki runs off in surprise. Kaname listens to her go.

Yuuki understands Kaname’s side, but she knows Zero’s beliefs more than ever too. Her thoughts turn dark again, thinking about how terrible this is.

In the day class, Zero is absent. Yuuki makes an excuse, but her friend isn’t buying it, especially seeing the big bandaid on Yuuki’s neck. She waves it off, but looking at Zero’s absent seat, she can’t bear it after all and runs out in the middle of class.

She runs to the night dorm, passing by the crazy old man on the way in.

Aidou is lounging around, discussing his BOY IDOL GENIUS with a pair of interviewers. When Yuuki walks in, he shoos them out to be alone with her. He tries to hit on her, but she says that she’s here to talk to Kaname and he lays off to lead her to him. However… he wants to know whose fangs made that wound on her neck… he palmed her bandage. Of course, drinking her blood would be severely punished, so… it’s an interesting question, but Kaname hasn’t said anything. This makes Yuuki go a bit dreamy over Kaname and she thinks that Zero might be safer if he joined the night class with Kaname to protect him. Aidou glares bloody murder.

The candles go out. Aidou grabs the banister and ice spreads along it capturing Yuuki’s foot. Aidou demands to know what Kaname is hiding. Aidou hops down towards her and wants to know what Kaname is to her. She stammers out the usual song and dance… saved from vampires 10 years ago etc etc. She owes him her life. Then… what is she to Kaname? Maybe there’s something about her blood. He wouldn’t let just anybody drink her blood, maybe these fangs are Kaname’s. Etc etc.

He grabs her arm and the ice spreads up it. Yuuki yells at him to stop and tries to slap him. Her arm is stopped… by Kaname. All the ice has instantly melted. Kaname turns to Aidou and bitchslaps him.

Aidou apologizes and runs off.

Kaname apologizes for Aidou, but she just spazzes out. Kaname tells her that she’s important to him and doesn’t want anything to happen. She wonders why exactly she is important to him. He shows her to the door and basically says to leave Zero to him. Yuuki demands to know what he’s planning to do. Kaname indicates her wounds and wonders… what if Zero had attacked more ferociously. She still pleads that they don’t force Zero into the night class. That’d just lead to disaster. The wound is nothing, Zero won’t do it anymore. Zero won’t hurt anybody else. She believes in him. Tears start rolling down her face again. Kaname caresses her face and apologizes, but there’s nothing that can be done. Between vampires and humans, those at level E (aka, succumbed to the bloodlust) cannot be changed back. Yuki runs out of the dorm in disbelief.

Kain thinks aloud about Zero’s vampire hunter past as Kaname walks past. Kaname says that Yuki’s the most precious thing in the world.

Yuuki thinks to herself that there’s no way Zero’s lost like Kaname thinks he may be. She still doesn’t know what to do. Suddenly, she senses Zero and runs towards his dorm.

Zero’s going through his clothes. The day class uniform gets thrown out of the dresser. A picture floats down… one with Yuki. He sits dejected on his bed. He loads his gun and remembers the headmaster telling him it will kill vampires and nobody else. He raises the gun to his head.

Yuki busts in and tackles him. He flips her over so that he’s on top, and pulls the gun she’s grabbed from him up to his neck.

He tells her that he’s reached level E and she has to kill him. He tears the bandage from her neck and tells her how shameful it is. He may hurt her again, perhaps even kill her. Aren’t you scared, Yuuki? Shoot!

Yuuki says that she could never do that and the gun falls from both their grips. Zero grabs his duffel bag and leaves. Yuuki sits up and sees the picture of the two of them. She throws the gun back and chases after him.

She catches him in the courtyard and hugs him. Everything’s okay now!

Flashback to the past. Zero mindlessly grabbed his own throat and tried to slash it open. Yuki stopped her and said the same thing.

Yuki didn’t understand anything, but she’s not scared. She’ll watch over Zero.

A strange woman (man?) meets with headmaster Cross to discuss Zero. Headmaster tells her (him?) that they’re fine… but that’s not what the rumors says. The headmaster is surprised for the moment, but then leaves.

Kaname watches Zero and Yuuki from a window.
