Absolutely Lovely Children #08 — Darth Squirrel

Making Sith lords with robot animal familiars everywhere proud.
Impressions:
Somewhere between Kyosuke’s Magneto-esque rantings, the psychic technobabble, and the fact that I’m trying to force my brain to function on a chocolate muffin and two hours of sleep, much of this episode flew right over my head with nary a second thought. The general gist is that Kyosuke’s some kind of crazy powerful esper that they have locked up in East Eden, a jail full of ECM devices specially made for espers. As he’s out and wandering around though, it’s not really working. He meets with Muscle Okama and then Minamoto (prompting the chief and Minamoto to visit him), and then through various machinations, an extremely dangerous psychokinetic esper manages to bust out and get ahold of an ECCM bracelet he had hidden away in the wall of his cell… along with guns and grenades to arm the other prisoners. I just won’t ask.
He wrecks havoc, including beating down poor Naomi, until the Children are called in (they were watching a magical girl show and slow to respond). Kaoru attacks, but he uses the force of her attack to destroy the wall and knocks out Aoi, planning to escape via sub. He tries to shoot Kaoru, but Kyosuke appears and whispers dark things in her ear, letting her protect herself, and then fire extremely focused shots at the guy and his sub. Kyosuke keeps it up until Kaoru loses it and goes berserk again. They all retreat, but then come back en masse and work with Kyosuke to manage to get in physical contact with Kaoru so they can teleport her to his crazily ECMed cell. He can’t have his Queen be dying like that just yet after all. He then flies off into the night like superman.
Except for that last part, I really am liking Kyosuke a lot as a villain. He makes a pretty good Magneto. They talked about his powers a little bit, but most of what I caught was that ECM isn’t terribly effective against him and he’s his own bag of trouble. I’m interested in how or why he thinks Kaoru is his ‘Queen,’ though as I understand it, there’s a premonition pretty early on in the manga that when Kaoru grows up, she’ll be the head of the esper side in an esper vs human war. I’m sure they’ll get to that eventually.
I really could have done without that scene of him flying around at the end though. That was just really silly looking. I was also sad that poor Muscle Okama didn’t make his grand return and was just sort of hanging around to be used as a joke at the end that Kyosuke and the squirrel "forgot something." Poor guy. He deserves better. Anybody with crotch lasers deserves better.
Next week though… hoo boy. The girls are all grown up and they really… shall we say… fill out their clothes. More Kyosuke too, so fun times ahead.
