Shinigami = Reisen Udonge Inaba?

Impressions:

I feel a little bad about skipping the summary on this episode, but it was weird. Really weird. Even for KKN it was pretty bizarre. After escaping bunnyears, the rabbit retreats as ‘reinforcements’ come and Kyouka realizes what’s going on. She explains that they’re in the middle of a ‘war,’ but then they’re attacked by more possessed robots before much more useful exposition is had. They decide to scout the high ground via ferris wheel and Shinigami wins the draw to go with Ouka. She wants him to kiss her to show his feelings, but he hesitates and they’re forced to leap out as the ferris wheel explodes. A dogeared robot-thing catches them and ‘dies’ as the fight starts up again.

Shinigami and Kyouka get trapped while Ouka hunts down the central controls and finds the dogears again. Kyouka and her ‘siblings’ as some kind of crazy object control ear energy creature demon THINGS that generally argue and feud with eachother and are on loan from the netherworld or something. Then Kyouka teamed up with Shinigami, bestowed upon her the magical catears to power her up and break out, but then the rabbit ears took her over again until Ouka knocked her mask off and she swung her sword around randomly ‘stabbing’ Ouka in her panic to not have her ‘ugly’ face be seen. Of course, everything turned out fine in the end, Shinigami kissed Ouka on the cheek and she and Kyouka are now friendly happy rivals. What a shocking and surprisingly development.

It was still a pretty decent episode aside from Kyouka’s ranting, which is really starting to wear thin on me. If she had a volume below "shrieking banshee," she’d be far easier to accept, but unfortunately, she does not. I like Shinigami without the mask, but the chin on the mask creeped me out anyway. There was also some animation budget silliness this episode. Kyouka’s little fight against random robots (see clip below) was very well done, but her fight against the possessed Shinigami at the climax of this arc was literally just a 30 second sequence of stills with animalgirl ranting over top. Why you’d animate grunt battles but mail it in for the big finish is beyond me, but hey… what do I know.
