Happy Canada Day, Gonzo

July 1st, 2008

As of yesterday, GDH (Gonzo’s parent company) has been given a 9 month grace period by the Tokyo Stock Exchange to get their financials in order or be delisted. While not the final deathblow, getting kicked off the stock exchange pretty much means that nobody is going to be giving you money anymore. Let’s see what Gonzo will be using to do this… Strike Witches, Rosario 2, and Linebarrel… HA! I guess they should have tried to make something good at some point in the last six years. Only Gonzo could manage to go under while anime DVD sales are reaching record levels.

SomethingAwful’s forums have catalogued the recent events leading up to Gonzo’s ignomious collapse if you’re curious about the inner workings. And thanks, Matt for prodding me about it.

  • sage says:

    That was fast.

    *hugs*

  • Ravage says:

Mwoah, they did do Last Exile and Gankutsuou in the last 5 years, and 2 out of 64825 is a pretty good ratio for GONZO in terms of good shows/junk. ;)

  • Edom says:

Awww…they did make Basilisk better than the manga, and introduce me to Welcome to the NHK!

  • Hinano says:

ROFLMAO wow I had no idea Gonzo was in a rut but somehow it now all makes sense!

  • Pokute says:

I’d rather let them make Druaga till the end of time rather than fall.

  • Well, at least it’s long enough for them to finish Strike Witches before they bite the big one.

  • P-Dash says:

I think all that needs to be said about this is AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • Gil says:

    F***! I need more Druaga!!!

    F***! I need more Druaga!!!

“Hey guys, you’ll have to wait for season 2 of Druaga. OH BY THE WAY, WE ARE CLOSING”

Oh Gonzo… lived as a troll, died as a troll.

  • Avisch says:

Is the general feelings towards GONZO (you know… the ones around here) similar in Japan?

Cause I wonder. The poor staff have to look online and cry when finding out that the general feeling is “YOU DON’T MAKE GOOD STUFF”.

Meh even Druaga had lost part of it’s focus by putting in the random “bratty kid needs to learn about his father” episode.

About the only Gonzo show I like is Speed Grapher.

  • zaeris says:

so your saying other shows don’t loses focus? goes and look at code geass, its totally derailed yet fan’s still watches that anime, check.

Zero no tsukaima, Shana season 2 for the first 11 episodes living on the slow pace, check.

Compare one episode to shows that spend half the series with fillers.

    Short answer: YES.

    RTFA.

  • […] The problem with fansubs and the industry is not a simple one. And there isn’t a simple fix for it (well except for shooting all of the downloaders). To be frank, I’m not qualified to talk about this problem on a business level. I don’t even think the industry really knows how to make money in this new market. Most of the arguments I’ve heard sound like people taking their personal experiences and trying to generalize them to the wider populace (including mine.) While they certainly sound nice, there isn’t enough evidence one way or the other to really talk about the issue. Especially since it seems that even providing fans with anime straight from Japan wasn’t enoug… […]
