Kyouran Kazoku Nikki #13 — Dangerously Furry

July 5th, 2008

Is it just me or is this show trying to push a furry agenda lately?

Firstly, I haven’t forgotten Penguin Girl. It’s off this week. NicoNico was down for maintenance last night, and now they’ve got episode… 11 (I think) up on the front page. The one with the goth-loli trap and Maguro arm-wrasslin’ at any rate.

Impressions:

The pacing on this episode was bizarre, even for KKN. It almost felt like it could have, or even should have, been split into two different episodes. We got a super condensed version of Chika moping about not being a ‘real’ member of the family for the first half, and then thrust right into one of her friends being turned into a cat for the second, along with the introduction of two new characters, another Hyouka-esque robot and the evil terrorist fairy, Raichou. We have seen Raichou a few times previously, but only as sort of a strange fairy creature observing events without doing anything malicious. She wasn’t even that threatening here either really, unless you count harming people-cats. They’re abominations of nature anyway.

So… yeah… it wasn’t that poor of an episode, but it felt extremely rushed and like we went through a lot of important plot in record time. Especially after spending the last two or three weeks on total nonsense, the drastic shift back to trying to tell a story seems odd… especially when it didn’t even happen until the last ten minutes. I did find Chika getting thrust into a very Marimite-ish role to be fairly amusing, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I laughed at the toilet joke either. I just find her a far better straight-man to the show’s wackiness than Ouka. Pierre has also become a rather amusing character, willing to throw around her giant albino ape weight to help her friends.

Brief Summary:

It starts out with Chika having general girly issues at school. Well, as girly as she can have. Apparently she beat up the gang of girl punks and became their boss, more or less. They even follow her into the toilet demanding instructions and whatnot. Catbrain tries to interfere, but Chika tells her that it’s her own problem. Back at school though, Chika and her group are attacked by a pair of soldiers because she’s a Child of Enka (well, they think she is) and ergo a horrible monster. She’s pinned down (the rape vibes are strong), but Pierre is there with a burly albino ape to rescue her.

At home, Chika mopes a bit because she knows that she’s a fake and doesn’t belong with the family. She leaves them during dinner, but Kyouka goes and cheers her up, because Chika is Kyouka’s daughter afterall. She’ll save her no matter what, you stupid daughter.

Back at school, one of her friends is missing and while the other two flip out at her while she’s hiding in the confessional, Kyouka pops out to take over and solve the mystery with the help of Gekka Watson. Kyouka rushes off to have fun with Chika and the others in pursuit. It turns out that Momo’s family is yakuza, but Kyouka’s still going to bust in, so dressed up in ninja suits, she assaults the poor yakuza. Gekka finds the hidden passage to an underground area where something is sealed off. It’s Momo herself. The others give the usual "we’ll accept you no matter what speech" and Chika orders Gekka to knock down the gate.

Teika, meanwhile, runs into a man who has something to tell him.

Actually… Momoka is a cat. Like… really catty. Well into the furry range. The girls think that she’s adorable but don’t reall get this crap. Kyouka’ll get to the bottom of this, no matter what Momo wants, but then the rest of the yakuza show up to dispose of… this monster. Turns out they’re invovled with Gebok too, now developing drugs to turn people into animals.

Before anything can happen, a strange robot looking sorta like Hyouka, only green and with tentacles, attacks the Yakuza, saying he’s here to save them. Kyouka names it Dekameron (Deka plus melon) to its distress. The all break out, but Momo’s still too afraid to go outside as she is. A voice rings out, and Momo grabs her head. There’s a fairy on the roof. Quick cut back to Ouka meeting Teika and his new manfriend to reveal that the fairy is apparently a famous terrorist, Raichou. She raises her wand, shouting "It’s showtime!"
