Guardian Charm Himari #01 — Cat Scratch Fever

January 6th, 2010

What’s with cat allergies lately?

First Episode Disclaimer:

I like to watch almost all of the first episodes of new shows just to give them a chance. Sometimes I’m surprised, sometimes I’m not. C’est la vie. Feel free to share your own opinions if you so desire.

I’m having some serious issues with Yuuto. He’s visually a clone of Macademy’s Takuto, only apparently gone through puberty in the year or so between the two series and now has an unnaturally deep voice. It’s creeping me out far more than anything else.

Uh… my own personal hangups on ZEXCS recycling their character designs aside, this was pretty much what I expected from them, for weal or woe. The music was a tad off-kilter, sometimes really good (the chanting surrounding many of the Himari scenes for example), sometimes really horrible (Rinko ranting on the roof, or Himari crawling into bed). The direction was also a little weird at times. I wasn’t expecting to see those ugly cut-ins so soon after 11eyes finished abusing the hell out of them. It was nice that the show felt like it was moving right along through the entire thing though. They certainly could have stretched either Himari’s intro or the whole Rinko vs Himari stuff to fill entire episodes if they had felt like it.

ZEXCS remains proficient enough in the production department. I wouldn’t call it impressive, but it’s still better than the vast majority of shows out there. I could have certainly used fewer screen filling panty shots… and it’d be nice if Rinko were just written out of the series completely. Hopefully she’ll at least be marginalized as the rest of the demons start showing up. Who gives a rat’s ass about the whiny clingy normal girl when there are soul devouring demons wandering around? Yuuto could use more of a personality too… or any personality for that matter, but at least he wasn’t particularly annoying. Just, not even present almost. The entire episode would have turned out pretty much the same if he had been a chair.

Considering that it doesn’t really have much (any) competition for my attention on Wednesdays (Bakatest being the only other show airing in the same general timeframe), and I didn’t mind watching it, I’ll probably continue with it. Don’t take that as a particularly strong recommendation if this kind of light comedy/action series isn’t your thing though, because it really hasn’t distinguished itself in any particular way as of yet either.

Meh, I didn’t really care much for the manga. I’m not really expecting much out of the anime either.

I remember getting a few cheap laughs from the green-haired loli though.

  • Ransom says:

I can’t wait to watch this subbed, I really like the manga, just hope the show goes the right way.

  • wilson191 says:

The drawing style is really different from the manga…quite nice

  • Anon999 says:

Pfft. Ushio and Tora was far superior to this nonsense. It’s a basic love story with demons and gods thrown in!

  • Moogy says:

Ah, ZEXCS. If nothing else, they excel at consistent production with decent directing, so it’s always refreshing to have a show by them around.

Kind of interesting that they’re branching out into manga adaptations for the first time this season – doing not one, but two, even.

  • Anonymous says:

A cat is fine, Yuuto. Now be a man and go have sex with it.

  • Lero says:

zexcs always brought solid and decent productions so, I’ll watch some episodes more to see some refreshing things ;D.

Makoto returns!!!! mwa hahahahaha Just As Planned! >:D

  • shadow says:

other anime with cute little girls and fanservice, again in the 2010

  • Nanaya says:

This series frightens me about how it could go (based on the manga) – it’s totally a swing series. It could either be completely awesome, average, or the next rosario+vampire adaptation. Terrifying.

    • Lollerman says:

That is what I am truly afraid off. They could decide that since they only have 12 episodes, they’ll do 2 or 3 episodes of intro, and then go off the rails into Fanservice territory, or actually do justice to the source material.

      I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  • ichibaka says:

unfortunately there won’t be a nice boat

  • Yue says:

Oh ZEXCS, don’t focus on fanservice but on zany comedy and shocking potrayals of parodies.

  • cutemi2 says:

    more BLOG Next WEEK

  • Hyosuke says:

Was actually pleasantly surprised after watching the first episode. Though I still think Rinko looks off compared to her manga counterpart. This is only the first episode though. As some people have pointed out, this could just as well go down the drain like so many others. I’m keeping my finger crossed as well since I was a fan of the manga. Don’t screw this up!

  • The Phantom says:

A girl that suddenly appears and forcefully lives with the half assed male lead, cliche anyone? as if that alone were not bad enough is filled with fanservice, meh! I’m autodropping this.
