Ookami-san and her Seven Companions #01 — The Glass Kicker

June 30th, 2010

Okay? Who am I to argue with JC Staff’s translation of the title?

Impressions:

The first half was unabashed introduction, right down to the narrator just going over every single character… and there are a buttload. The narrator in general I could definitely do without. The "Ookami-san has no breasts…" followed by "Ookami-san still has no breasts…" followed by "Ookami-san… NO BREASTS" was old before it was used even once. Her pointing out half the jokes or gags as they’re told was also… unpleasant. Subtlety is a virtue. It worked well when JCStaff used the same trick in Potemayo because so much of the show was purely visual. Here though, they’re just ruining jokes by explaining them. All the accents in this show also irritate me, but Hickboy in particular. SPEAK LIKE A MAN. That may or may not be a personal hangup at this point where I begin to twitch wildly whenever I hear Osakan or de gozaru.

The second half and its Cinderella myth was a lot better than the first since the narrator actually shut up for periods of time and let the characters do things. It’s about as well-animated as you’d expect from JC Staff. The action was unexpected, but competent… but there are plenty of places where it’s clear that they cut corners on animating other things. The characters could use a little more depth too. Hick is a simpering idiot with enough balls to confess his love, and then whine the rest of the episode. Ryoko is angry. Applehead has an apple for a head.

It was a decent first episode, but nothing that really blew me away. The music was nice, the Cinderella kicking joke at the end was funny, but the first half was the epitome of a clumsy and awkward introduction. Once that was out of the way, it seemed like a nice and decent little show. Since it airs in its own little time bloc all to itself, my attention is its to lose. Although Ryoko could really stand to ditch those cat gloves…

No OP this week, just the ED. I’ll rip that when I get the chance… which YouTube is automatically blocking the audio for… OKAY, to Megavideo it is. *shrug*

    Who’s the one voicing Ookami-chan?

I really enjoyed the animation from the ending.

  • blurg says:

This anime is clearly the most horrible piece of crap ever and that’s just great

  • The Phantom says:

It remind me a bit of Toradora… I still have to watch this episode though.

  • amyable says:

Who does Rie voice? Is her role more of that “Baka inu!” or “URUSAIURUSAIURUSAI!” crap? If so, no thxkbai.

  • MisaoFan says:

Rie Kugimiya appears in upcoming episodes of Okami-san to voice a blond tsundere named Mimi Usami.

  • Yue says:

Another fine example of horrible ANIME physics and aerodynamics… or it could have been me hallucinating.

Behold, my guilty pleasure for the season.

  • Anise Punter says:

Underwhelming first episode, but there’s bits and pieces in there where you look and say “this could turn out pretty well.”

  • Aex says:

Decent episode, pretty fun at points. I like it, shows promise. Why do I feel like they’re going to make a big deal out of Ryoushi being the one who threw the rock and disarmed the blond guy though? Kinda a let down Ryouko didn’t figure that out after he took the pipe for her, makes her seem dumber. Well, as long as they don’t do the “random guy gets credit for it, Ryoushi has to convince everyone it was him” cliche, I’m good.

  • Albedo says:

Not a bad start. We’ll see what episode 2 has to offer.

  • Jack Damn says:

    – Liked the episode and the show’s premise.
    – R-E-A-L-L-Y tired of boob and panty jokes in anime.
    -^This.

  • Yue says:

Does anyone know a remedy for my tendency to associate seiyuu roles from another series?

Currently, I’m having a “KUROKO!! Koko ni omae naze!?” attack.

  • MisaoFan says:

    This is from Railgun.

  • Tensho says:

I like the narrator, especially if it is Kuroko, lol.

  • Hunter-Wolf says:

Actually the main character DID confess his love (which might take other characters in similar shows the entire show or might never even happen at the end of the show) .. so he indeed isn’t a coward he just is socially awkward and has a case of phobia (not sure that staring phobia thing is real or not but people can have many unreasonable fears) .. not to mention he saved her by sniping the knife out of that delinquent’s hand with a stone.

And people .. the Narrator .. how the heck you still don’t get it … the Narrator is there to stay and it fits perfectly with the “fairytales” theme.

I find it very amusing and a fresh change from the typical ways of storytelling in anime (and no she doesn’t just say what you are seeing .. she actually was the source for a lot of info that can’t be given through the characters themselves unless through boring elongated dialogues .. overlaying the narrator over the scenes allows for more than one stream of info and keeps things very lively) … but i do agree the “Ookami has small boobs” joke was overdone but it isn’t really that much of a problem .. Slayers Lina Inverse had that running gag and it didn’t kill kittens or make the sky fall.

You guys are trippin’. This anime be the shizz, yo.
