The Legend of the Legendary Heroes #01 — Inverse Lina

July 1st, 2010

I kind of wish they ripped Slayers off more though…

Impressions:

This is apparently going to be going a mostly slapstick route, complete with the occasional breaking of the fourth wall for gags. It’s almost like it’s trying to be the gender-swapped version of Slayers, with the ‘evil’ snarky mage a male, the blonde swordsman a female… and just cheeky instead of a moron, and the pushy princess mage character has a drill ponytail. It’s lacking a number of things though, primarily pacing and direction. Everything just feels so slow right now. Even the giant golem ravaging the landscape felt completely unimportant and trivial. The Shion segments of the episode killed every single bit of momentum that the show had. There weren’t too many big issues in tone consistency since the serious and humorous sides were very clearly delineated and nary did comedy intrude on Shion or drama on Lyner, but neither bit was particularly strong at all and that stopped them from getting any kind of inertia built up. Plus, interrupting giant golems firing lasers for bad drama is a no-no.

Everything else was about what you’d expect from Zexcs. Good production, good music, but nothing that’ll impress you. The whole show just needs more drive to it. More comedy, more adventure, more drama, more anything. Well, preferably not more drama. It feels like there are a lot of pieces that are almost there in order to put together at least a fun little light hearted fantasy adventure, but right now it’s just a half-cooked mess of sludge served up with a delicious glass of riesling ritalin. Given the lackluster showing fom the other Thursday shows though, I’m probably going to end up giving both of them a second look regardless. Here’s to hoping that Zexcs can pull this one together a little bit better now that the intros are out of the way. This was easily their weakest first episode in a long time, and yes, I’m including Chuu-bra’s talking nipples in that.

No more dango for you until you get more entertaining.

with the ‘evil’ snarky mage a male, the blonde swordsman a female… and just cheeky instead of a moron,

God, now you just got me thinking about how awesome an anime based on 8-bit theatre would be over stuff like this.

    • Yue says:

Behold the power of long, beautiful, silky, blonde hair especially if its well animated.

[please ZECXS handle Shiina Dark’s animation]

  • Jack Damn says:

    – Slapstick is good.
    – I have high hopes for this as I’m always looking for Slayers type stuff.
    – Please don’t be Scrapped Princess 2.
    – Will watch.

  • TOKWA says:

    I hope it’s just good as regous…regois…REGIOS
and doesn’t have any “ZEXCS” scenes

    • Nanaya says:

After reading through the light novels that are tl’d, I found that I re-watching Regios isn’t a possibility anymore. They butchered it and screwed with the pacing too much.

  • Myssa Rei says:

Did… I just hear Jun Fukuyama? And Saki Fujita as the girl who’s chasing him?

  • aya natsume says:

    wow…beautiful character designs…definitely gonna watch this… :D

  • Anise_Punter says:

Dammit Aroduc, I wasn’t planning to watch this, but then I see “This is apparently going to be going a mostly slapstick route”, get curious, end up watching, and end up thoroughly enjoying myself.

This is at LEAST the third time you’ve done this to me, after Potemayo and Seitokai no Ichizon, and I’m sure I’m forgetting at least two more.

  • Aex says:

Well, this episode redefined mediocre for me… Not bad enough to stop watching, not good enough to really care. The drill-hair girl was the most amusing part, the guy looking for his sister felt so out of place I had to laugh, and Ferris felt like a minor character after like two seconds. Hopefully the next episode will invoke some sort of reaction…

  • Beccam says:

I’m so frustrated about this series. It’s actually insanely good later on (though a little talky) but it totally shot itself in the foot first episode, so no one watches it. Sad. T_T
