Nurarihyon’s Grandson #01 — Do Not Operate Heavy Machinery

July 5th, 2010

Show may cause drowsiness and loss of consciousness.

Impressions:

This was such a by the books Jump show that it may have caused me to lapse into a coma for a small chunk of it. Everything is so cookie cutter and presented without any trace of soul whatsoever, right down to what could charitably be called the ‘plot’ of this episode being nothing more than the Scooby Gang deciding to go putz around with ghosts. They’re already bandying around Jump’s trademark "Friends are always with you!" public service announcement too. I estimate at least three more "Friends are just super spectacular" speeches by the end of the month. Actually, that would probably be an improvement to the completely inconsequential drivel spewed from start to finish here. It was sapping my will to live.

Deen certainly didn’t help matters either. They may as well just call this show "Talking, Stills, Pans, and Sometimes Speedlines." While I do believe that Deen’s reputation for poor production is undeserved, this show certainly isn’t going to help their cause. DO SOMETHING. Make your damn show interesting in any way whatsoever. I would be a lot more forgiving if this was a Sunday morning show aimed to please small children, but unfortunately, it’s not. It probably would do much better then too. Small children are immune to its soporific effects after three bowls of Sugar Crusted Marshmallow O’s.

I did rather like the ED though, for whatever that’s worth.

Speedlines and glowing eyes.

  • Serpit says:

You know, it’s pretty fun following both your blog and psgels’. Your opinions tend to be the polar opposite.

  • apple says:

^this, they always have totally different opinions, pretty amusing

  • Bill says:

IMO, psgels doesn’t have a clue about quality, particularly in the way of execution.

Something is good purely on the basis of whether it’s a concept he feels is original/novel (*cough* Umineko, Shangri-La, Night Raid, Bantorra *cough*), regardless of wretched pacing, sloppy animation, or poor cinematography.

Similarly, one cliche series is gold if those cliches just so happen to appeal to him, while another is instantly shit if they don’t. Can’t recognize where a director or scriptwriter has actually done good work.

  • Ian K says:

On the other hand, it’s nice to read a blog where someone, you know, actually ENJOYS what they’re watching and can get enthusiastic about it.

    • Tangent says:

That would matter if he ever rated any episode of a show he was covering as anything less than “Good.” I do get a good laugh every time he drops a series after heaping praise on every single episode.

      • Ian K says:

That’s just because psgels blogs shows he/she likes, while Aroduc generally blogs shows he hates. I’ve long since realized that neither is representative of what I like or hate.

  • Honoo says:

Any clues on how many episodes this will be?

If this is going beyond 24 episodes I’m going to forget I was even interested in it.

    • Aroduc says:

I believe it’s confirmed for 24/26, but I don’t have a source off the top of my head.

  • Ransom says:

I really enjoy this manga, one of my favorites of jump, and not that cheesy as you might think.

Anyway, it will be a shame if it’s only going to be 26 episodes. Probably will cover in the best scenario up to the Tanuki arc…

  • TOKWA says:

Aroduc nii-nii is really the opposite of psgels
Aroduc HATED Giant killing and pgsels liked it a lot

    I prefer Aroduc nii-nii’s blog anyway…

  • misaofan says:

This is going to be the best show of this season!

  • MisaoFan says:

Today is Shin Koihime Musou beach OVA episode seen on Saymove !

  • Aex says:

Well when I heard Jump I was expecting something a lot worse and drawn-out, but hey, not a bad episode. Not great, but it wasn’t horrible or anything. Of course, nothing actually happened, but that’s besides the point for episode one. Off to start the manga now.

  • The Phantom says:

*Snores*, my vote for the worst show of the season, the only thnig barely noticeable from this garbage is the ridiculously stupid hairstyle of the main char, is someone always pulling his hair or something or is he going to use it as somekind of weapon?
