Dog Days #01 — War is Confusing

April 2nd, 2011

I DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS WORLD.

Impressions:

This was confusing. After the relatively cliche first half of "war’s brewing, gotta summon us a hero, here’s some kid that likes jumping off of high things" we go into the second half where battle between the two kingdoms breaks out. Except that it’s more like Takeshi’s Castle than it is actually war. It almost reminds me of Dual!! PTA in how their ‘war’ is kind of a joke to them, complete with announcers and everybody stopping to listen to the announcement of Shinku’s arrival. I really hate the character art for the generic ‘soldiers’ too (they turn into cat heads when ‘killed’). Seven Arcs is clearly abusing CG like a mofo for this, and while it’s relatively transparent for the backgrounds, it doesn’t work so well for the soldiers, and keeping the art style looking gimpy like that is just making my brain itch. It’s like watching a bunch of Dragon Force/Fire Emblem/Ogre Battle characters bounce off each other. In a Takeshi’s Castle ‘war.’ Seriously, I have no idea what to even make of that.

Production in general was pretty lacking this episode too. About all that the battles really had were posing from actual named characters and then your standard "swing sword, everything explodes" attacks. Like I said in the preview though, Seven Arcs production tends to wax and wane with the moon. Asura Cryin’ was abysmal until around episode 3 and Sekirei/StrikerS had similar issues. It’s disappointing, but not alarmingly so… yet. On the up side, the cast is relatively decent. Aside from the very conflicting tones in the first and second half, everything’s pretty lighthearted. Shinku’s voice doesn’t fit him well, but he’s competent and is more than happy to take on the role of being Biscotti’s hero. That alone puts him far ahead of 95% of protagonists out there. He also somehow has managed to be in an almost all-female show without having his face stuffed into someone’s breasts or panties. Again, yet.

Overall, it was an okay episode and did little more than introduce the world and characters. It was far from great and didn’t really have any kind of hook outside of being somewhat weird. I really hope that they can do a better job figuring out if they want to be silly or serious because doing both did not work, or at the very least, pit some of the non-generics against each other. The less we have to see of those disgusting things, the better.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH. Anyways, he’s so manbulous he doesn’t need that shit to sell DVD’s!

    SASSOU TOUJOU! YUUSHA, IZUMI SHINKU.

oh my are those chocobos I see!?

  • AfroSquirrel says:

    Where are my magical lasers?

  • Jack says:

    No sharks? Fuck this.

  • Anise_Punter says:

Though I didn’t like Star Driver all that much, I feel we would be cheated if we didn’t get one “IT’S A PINCH!” out of this show.

  • The Phantom says:

Star driver was much better than 90% of the shows that were airing last season (and yes I know the final episode airs tomorrow but the show is pretty much over).

And about this show, there are chocobos and the girl has a white mage robe o.O? whats this all about? So long they dont go the route of “is a war but nobody gets killed and everyone is happy at the end” I’ll give it a try.

  • The Deviant says:

    NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

  • Aex says:

I can’t take anything about this show seriously yet, and I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to. Aside from that, it looks pretty fun, so I’m looking forward to next week! Only bad part so far is that you know the hero will more then likely go back to his world at the end, so it’s gonna kinda suck to see him get attached to any of the characters.

The whole “war is a game and the losers only get depressed” thing is gonna take some getting used to too… XD

  • Supramax says:

Lol it sounds like the anime got all it’s composers from the people who made dynasty warriors.

  • jingoi says:

    haven’t watched this yet.
Is the hero the blonde guy smiling a lot?
I assume the predictable pairing of pink haired girl and blonde guy.
Still trying not to be pissed on IS’s boring decision of Ichi x Houki.

  • Yue says:

may I ask a question? anyone may answer…

When characters have nekomimi, do they still have ningenmimi?

    • Aex says:

In this world, I don’t think so. Then again, Eris from “Asobi no Ikuyo” had both, so who knows…

      • Yue says:

Usually if the nekomimi is located above the head, hair covers the sides of the face where ningenmimi are positioned.

Now that you mentioned Eris, I have no problem if characters have an additional pair of mimi. It does look
more awkward and painful to me if there’s no mimi to the side of the face. Thanks Aex.

  • […] I’m a little late to the party, and at this point, it’s common knowledge the Internet’s collectively meh on this thing. I’m not particularly fond of it either, but it’s […]

  • Rednal says:

On the bright side, it’s nice to have an energetic, outgoing protagonist for once. ^^
